I have a habit of reading reviews first even if it's a series I've read through. That being said I went in skeptical I was going to like this one. Maddie was very unlikable in the last book and I want sure that was going to change. After reading a couple of 2-3 star reviews I decided the reviewer 1. Didn't read the entire book or 2. Wants all characters to be perfect and exactly the same. Maddie has a loud aggressive personality ( we all have one friend like this) and her insecurities shine through. She is insecure about her weight and makes jokes at her own expense. She was freed and mere days later her sister with a disability was kidnapped. Most of the girls adapted fairly quickly but not everyone would. So Maddie is realistic. She admits to bring lazy and uninterested in trying but comes around. I ended up liking her and Hassen. I think it's unfair to give a writer few stars even though you loved the book but hated the main character.

Barbarian Taming A SciFi Alien Romance Ice Planet Barbarians Book 9 eBook Ruby Dixon Reviews

This is my absolute favorite of the books. I was not a fan of Hassen in the last book for kidnapping Maddie’s sister. The author explains him really well and I actually felt so bad for his character. He wanted to be loved after losing his whole family to the kui sickness. The you see him from Maddie’s point of view and realize it is worse than you could ever imagine. She sees a lonely hunter who sacrificed for the tribe with nothing and no one to show for it. That he could actually leave and take care of himself and never return but he does not do this. Yet the tribe does not try to understand what he did with kidnapping Maddie’s sister and exiles him instead. This was a sad story but as always it has a wonderful ending. My favorite story ( so far ) LOL!!!
Poor Maddie really feels like the outcast - the only unmated female, and she has made the tribe uncomfortable with her yelling and throwing things when her sister Lilah was kidnapped.
Poor Hassen really is an outcast - he’s exiled for having kidnapped Lila; and boy, is he glad he isn’t stuck with the crying human
These two outcasts find they both feel the same way. Hassen agrees to teach Maddie to hunt so she can feel useful; and agrees to scratch that female itch. Only, he’s ready for the commitment of being a pleasure-mate. Maddie is not.
I just wish so much of her wasn’t so hung up on a negative, fat, body image throughout the story.
Wow! The cave!? Hooray, the toilets!
Recommend the book and series)))
Again, not LOL funny as in several of the previous books -- which tickled me so much -- but still well written and enjoyable. Normally I do not appreciate much stream of consciousness writing (wherein an author tells us about the character rather than shows it with dialogue or other physical action). But Ms. Dixon does a great job with it -- never boring and no "just get on with it already" racing through my mind. Some fine humor here and in Maddie's dialogue, particularly. Here we have Maddie (opinionated, angry, sharp-tongued, always frowning and griping) and Hassen (kidnapper, angry, lonely, exiled). In gravitating toward each other they both allowed themselves to open and change and feel more uplifting emotions. A nice evolution for each of them and for the two of them together. I like how Ms. Dixon has yet to use in this series cardboard characters with any of her people. Their personalities shine through whatever events occur. As an aside, while I read through this series I am SO glad I live in Arizona. That cold, snow and ice -- NOT for me.
Love, love, LOVE this series and this is one of the best of them all.
Maddie and Hassen get their HEA.
I wasn't sure when or if they were going to actually get there for most of the book.
So, if you haven't read the other eight books in this series, I highly recommend them all. Each one gives you a little more of the picture of this icy planet they our aliens and humans have come to be on.
Great writing, fabulous sense of humor, compassion and tragedy and sexy, blue aliens who love and protect their mates.
Yes, there are sex scenes but they are well written and not gross. Some are even funny, especially this book. Maddie has a great sense of humor.
I am excited about the new changes for the tribe and ready for their next adventure.
I continue to enjoy & look forward to each installment in this light-hearted alien romance. I like its mix of sex scenes, true rhetoric without relentless angst, action scenes, fantasy settings & situations. I enjoy the drama of some of the circumstances. (Cave-in / earthquake). This is one of the few series I've read that narrates in the First Person well.

I was happy to see some of the 'issues' I had with earlier books explained - ex why the tribe didn't stay at the ocean side caves during the brutal season (altho still don't understand the hunters not 'fishing' as a means of adding missing minerals etc to the tribe's diet). The turn in circumstances this book is leading us is an intriguing one. I'm worried about Asha & found myself thinking about her character & the construct of a social structure that wouldn't have assigned tasks for each member (she's allowed to stay in her furs day in & out depressed over loss of her baby).

This is what I mean - those past couple sentences are why I love these books! I love this writer's ability to create a world that gets me thinking about the situation / circumstances / interactions etc. She may have 'holes' that need to be addressed IMO but in general its so well constructed that you find yourself thinking about this alternate universe outside of the time you're actually reading!

I liked the Hero & Heroine - he was a little more good-natured & bordered on being too eager-to-please than I prefer - she was a little snarky & demanding - which I enjoy. I like strong characters that are more realistic (flawed) in deeds & actions than what's considered ideal.

Finally - I was disappointed by the book's cover - I can't see his horns! I like the blue suede skin & horned descriptions but need a little help from the covers! They're alien - lets not hide that!
